Maltese like to play and love attention ... they love kids. they can't play for long just like kids but they are lap dogs too... so if your kid wants to play ,, maltese will play and if he wants to watch TV ... maltese will do that too... the kid can comb their hair... maltese are toy dogs ( usually 5-6 lbs) so .... maltese can stay in the kids room .. and even can go on kids bed ..b ecause they are neat and tidy... the kid can make hair styles on the kid ... and maltese not BARK much,,, mine bark only when there is very loud noice.

A mix bread can be a good dog, go to your local shelter. If you must have a purebread, then boxers are really good family dogs so are golden ret. but they do shed alot. If you want a smaller dog I would get a pug or a french bulldog. Good luck!!

I would say a pug, a beagle, Boston Terrier, or a smaller sized poodle. Be aware that beagles bark, and pugs do have a tougher time in hot weather so living in Florida might not be the best.
