Last night my golden ret. started to have a deep raspy cough. she has shown no signs of not feeling

she ate a "busy bone", which is soft, earlier in the evening. sometimes she tends to lick the rug, which has dog hair on it, after eating it. when she is sleeping she doesnt seem to cough but when awake she has this raspy, deep cough. it is not continous but often. i tried to look in her throat %26amp; do not see anything. she doesn't cough when you rub it either. she is up to date with all vaccinations. could she have a hairball like a cat? or can she have a cold? she was in the car with the windows down a little yesterday and it was 45 degrees. being christmas eve i cant take her to the vet til tuesday. do you know why she is coughing and can i give her anything?

It is possible she irritated her throat on the bone or something else. Eating and drinking ok? Is her temperature normal (rectal temp should be 100.5 degrees to 102.5 degrees)? Make sure she has plenty of water and as long as it doesn't worsen she should be fine until tuesday. Dogs can get hariballs, not as often as cats but it is possible. You can give a dog a hairball remedy like a cat (over the counter at petco), just a larger amount. If it is a hairball or minor irritation it will probably be better by tuesday; if it is something more serious it will likely worsen so just keep a close eye on her over the next day and see how she does.

She could have kennel cough. She can still get that if she has her shots. If you let her try and get over it by herself she might get a upper respiratory infection. Good luck.

it could be worms or simply an irritant. i would keep a close eye on her for 24 hrs or so, and if it shows no sign of letting up, or gets worse at all, you will have to find an emergency clinic, especially if she starts to cough up blood. make sure she has plenty of clean water and always keep a close eye on her while she chews on any bones or toys to insure she doesnt choke.
