How do tell someone they need to clean their house?

How do you explain to someone (mother-in-law) that they need to invest in cleaning supplies? Its to the point where i want to go do it for her... (I do a little at a time when I vist).

Its to the point where roaches fall off the wall at any time of teh day, you can't leave without being covered in dog hair. rancid dish water in the sink with over flowing dishes. if there is a flat surface in the house sht is piled up there... me and my boyfriend (his mother) are so embrased when we go over there. We even stay at a hotel when we decide to stay for the weekend... please help! any sugestion would be helpful....thanx..neatfreak in hell!

My mother in law was a pack rat and didn't keep her house clean either. My hubby and I even cleaned the whole house once for her, got rid of a lot of stuff and within a month or two it looked and smelled like before we cleaned it. We even tried giving her a gift certificate for a cleaning service and she never used it. Unfortunately, that was just the way she liked living and felt comfortable with things the way they were. We eventually stopped going over to her house and tried to have her come to ours as often as possible. If she is anything like my mother in law, there isn't really much you are going to do to change her even if you try our methods you will just be crushed when she goes back to her old ways.

My suggestion is send a gift bucket of cleaning supplies. Provide lint brush, dish washing liquid and the likes in the bucket. Since this is your mother-in-law, I'd send it or leave it anonymously. If that doesn't give here the hint, maybe talk to your boyfriend about getting her a period maid visit. I would let him deal with her directly.

Hopefully she's otherwise a busy person ~ you could get her some business cards from a local cleaning service or even a gift certificate or something. Maybe say "I know things have been really busy, maybe this will help"

But with the roaches ~ her best bet is to move!

you should try telling them ''omg my bff's house is really clean''! then they will clean it

You don't. It is none of your business. If your partner feels it is important he should tell her. It may make you very uncomfortable to be there in her home. I can understand this. But you need to keep your mouth shut...especially if you desire to have a good relationship with her for the next say 30 years!

i would have him talk to her, she is his mother. if you are volunteering to help he could let her know; put it to her like you are worried about her, not that you are embarrassed

I once offered to clean my friends mom's house, since I was having my child's birthday party there. She, her mom, went balistic and then teary eyed. I didn't mean to offend, and only wanted to do it since she was letting me use her home. Better left with a hint here and there, asking where something you have given them or say nothing at all!

just ask her if she needs help cleaning? tell her you have observed that it appears like she is overwhelmed by the houshold chores and you would like to help her clean.
