Does anyone out there have a long haired pug? I think I do.?

I have seen both black and tan pugs with short hair.I read that years ago when the chinese were breeding them once in a while there would be one with long hair.My dog doesnt have papers so it doesnt really matter but he is a pug in every way flat face ,bulgy eyes and little body with curly tail but he has thick beautiful long black hair.He diffenitely has a silly pug personality. So is it possible he is full blood or do you think he might be a mix?I wouldnt know with what.I got him from a freind who got him from walmart. He was named pug when I got him.Not that that matters but thats what they called him and thats what they said he was 2 owners ago.Well he has a home now Ill never part with him no matter what but I just wonder what he might be alot. Thanks he weighs about 9 pounds.

may be part pekingese - they look like pugs with long hair and often come in black as well.

i had two pekes and when i shaved them down in the summer, they looked identical to a pug. my girls weighed about 8-12 pounds and acted goofy as well. both breeds are great, so if it's one of them, you've got a really sweet boy.

black/white ones:

Sounds like you might have gotten a long haired chi and pug mix. Definitely NOT a purebred pug. Especially since they were being given/sold at wal mart. Puh-lease, no good reputable breeder is going to wal mart to give/sell their dogs. LMAO

Possibly, he could be a throw-back in the genetic pool.

In Asia the Pekingnese was orig. crossbred to produce the Chinese Pug,.. which the Dutch quickly brought back with them to Europe.

Hope this helps.

Had Puggies and know their history.

No such thing. It's a mutt. I didn't know they sold dogs at WalMart. I suppose you mean someone giving them away free out front?

heres a link that says that occasionally they used to find a long haired one in a litter......so "maybe" you have one???? Ive never seen one d oyou have a pic?? MY pug has short hair!! lol

The Pug made it's debut in Europe in 1500's or 1600's, when China began to trade with European countries such as Portugal, Spain, Holland and England. Small dogs which had been presented as gifts returned from the Orient with the traders, and so began the rise of the Pug's popularity in Europe. In China, it was common practice to interbreed amongst the three types of dogs they favored, and many times breeders would find a long haired Pug among a litter of puppies, or one with white spots on its head.

Its the last sentence

ps heres the link to that paragraph, its got some interesting info on the breed

It sounds like he is actually pekenese. They are a pug cousin! They have pretty much all the same characteristics but longer hair and they are a little smaller.

I love your story. Your pug should be well equipped for cold weather!! My Pomeranian is a cold weather dog too. He has two coats! Don't worry about what other people think either. You love your dog and that's all that matters. He is your friend and he gives you unconditional love, that is more than some people give you! Enjoy your little dog and give it a good home and lots of love. He will return the favor many times over. Good luck.
