Do Border Terriers shed a lot?

was thinking of getting one but my dad and grandpa are allergic to dog hair. Will they be okay if i get one, even if I try to brush out all of the hair that their getting rid of? Or do I have to keep looking for another dog that doesn't shed at all?

I bred BTs for over 12 yrs. You should go to a breeder with your dad and grandpa and see how they react to the dogs. Have them pet the dogs, rub on their coats, let them lick your dad and grandpa. Some people are allergic to the dander, the hair, and the saliva or a combination or any. Borders have a stiff wire coat...in its life cycle the coat starts out shorter and tight to the skin(look at show dogs at the Border Terrier Club of America by going to www.AKC.org) ..as the coat get older it grows shaggier. Some people can't handle the texture of the hair or the dander (BUT this can apply to any breed of dog so you would have to test them with each breed of dog). YES Borders do shed...they shed more when the coat blows (get shaggy). At that stage the coat should be "handstripped" (plucked out) done correctly it doesn't hurt the dog and they will still have the undercoat left. This usually only needs to be done every 6 months unless you want to keep the tighter coat going..you can "roll" (pluck only the older long hairs) the coat...this may have to be done weekly. You can't brush ALL of the shedding hair out of any dog...all dogs shed unless they are hairless, some just shed into their own coat so you don't see it on the floor-you have to brush them to remove the hair and prevent matts.
