Ok, I have a German Shepherd, Lab, and Chow mix puppy. He has silky hair and it sheds everywhere! It gets on the carpet, bed, and I have dog hair all over my clothes. What can I do?

Also to get hair off of clothes roll a piece of packing tape sticky side out in a loop over your hand and "stick" the hair off of yourself. Rubber gloves dampenend work well too. The dollar store and Walmart sell a small rubber lint roller that can be rinsed with water and reused and that works really well for less than a dollar. Also, if its an inside dog, consider having him clipped by a groomer year round if you don't want to buy the ShedEnder...I'll guaruantee it will save you money though if you buy it! It has us...

A good way to help your dog cut back on shedding is buy feeding him a good quality diet, I had a shepard cross who shed like crazy, then we switched his food to Science Diet and his shedding was cut in half! It also helped with the pooper scooper duties....

If your really THAT concerned you could get his hair shaved off. My sister's dog shed alot, and she did that. The dog looked really weird, but there wasn't hair all over. I have also seen some shampoos in petstores that are supposed to prevent shedding...I've never tried them so I don't know if they work. As for the clothes, you can buy one of those sticky rollers that removes pet hair and use it before you leave the house. If it becomes an on-going, serious problem...take him to the vet.

Go to your local pet store and find the Shed N Blade.

Works wonders - we used to have a german shepherd. It removes all the dead hair about ready to fall off. I could get piles off our dog's coat. He liked getting combed too.

Also feed a good quality food - that helps.

Right now is the beginning of shedding season for all dogs. Puppies will shed for the coming season but they are also shedding to get rid of their puppy (downy-type) fur and getting their adult coats. It is a messy situation and will get a little better, but not go away. The best thing that you can do for your pup is make sure that it is getting the nutrients it needs in its food, and if I were you, I would check with the vet on this. Some pups need additional oils for their coats and vitamins, or the food that would be enriched with those nutrients, and after that, buy a good brush and brushing glove to groom your pet every morning. Better food can help with shedding. Brushing will help as well. There are groomers which can use a shampoo that is supposed to help cut down on the shedding as well.

As for shedding once or twice a year... that's a laugh! My lab mix sheds 356 days a year. It can lessen, but it never stops. Keeping your puppy off beds and sofas helps cut down on where the fur lands, so that may be your best bet.

PLUS... huge tip, buy a Dyson vacuum cleaner. It will last with all the fur. I have 2 dogs and a revolving 3rd foster dog, so we know fur balls!

Constant brushing of the dog may help...even though it will be a pain. For your clothes...lint brush...cheap and effective. If it bothers you that dog hair is in your bed...do not allow your dog on the bed. Make the bed the one place that he/she is not allowed or keep a larger than your bed sized cover/blanket over your bed until you are ready to go to sleep; replace when you wake up. A good vacuum and vacuuming daily will assist with the carpet. If you think it's bad now...wait for the spring when it starts warming up and he/she starts loosing that winter coat. The hair is one of the many sacrifices of owning a pet...but in the long run that loving companion is definitely worth it.

The best option is to take him to the groomer once a week for a bath and blow out. It's best to find a groomer that uses the Hydrosurge bather (it's absolutely amazing). I work at a clinic and our groomer does a German Shepard once a week and a few Golden Retrievers once a week and the difference it makes is amazing.
