Why can't I find coats/sweaters for large dogs?

I guess it is assumed that b/c a dog is large that he has thick hair? My dogs have thin short fur. I've looked at Petsmart, Target, Walmart, ect. I can find plenty of coats that will fit my cairn terrier--the hairiest dog in the household.

Or do dogs need coats at all?

sure, that wolf with it's dense undercoat and long fur doesn't need a sweater. Neither do spitz type dogs, and many other thick coated dogs.

But due to selective breeding, we have eliminated protective fur in many of our breeds. Sure, your dog may have a thin layer of fur, but it's not doing much when it's snowing outside.

3 of my dogs have very this fur, the insides of their legs are bare, and they are very cold when they go outside. Now, i HATE people dressing up their dogs for the sake of dressing them up, but if my dogs don't want to play outside because it is cold, i am putting a coat on them.

Surprisingly, many smaller pet boutiques and frilly lacy dog stores have normal looking(i mean not pink and fluffy) sweaters and large coats. That is where i had to go to get mine(3 larger dogs). Because these stores are so small, they will usually order stuff for you, so even if they don't have it, they can get it.

My friend has a great Dane. and she bought some on on eBay or go to a search engine (yahoo) and put in large dog sweaters and you will find it.

A friend of mine has a pit bull that doesn't like the cold too much. I found him a miniature horse blanket on eBay. He looked kinda funny in it but he did look happier!

this (coats for dogs) has to be somebodies idea of a joke or something, or a girl who wanted her pets to be cute.....they have fur for a reason. i wonder how long dogs have been around on this planet before someone invented dog coats......not to sound mean, its just my $0.02......

but you could try ebay, or if you are crafty(or know someone) you could make some your self.

You have to go to the horse catalogs, like Dover or Smartpac. Some short haired dogs need a coat when outside in frigid temps, or maybe an elderly or sick dog. Smartpac has some really nice blankets that are like small horse blankets. I just got one for my Pit Bull Terrier. The pet stores don't have the right kind. Go on line. I've seen some really really nice ones advertised in Clean Run magazine. My previous dogs (RIP) used to spend all day at the barn and the 2 girls had pelts ( a Border Collie and an Eskie) but Thumper, a medium mix breed had short hair and he did appreciate his doggie coat!

I have a pit..........big chest. Go online. Dr. fosters and smith has sweaters/shirts that fit him in size xl. a site called dogsloveart.com has some big shirts too. Really all you gotta do is google "shirts for large dogs" you'll find alot. GOOD LUCK!!
