She sheds something awful. I brush her every day sometimes twice a day. Yet I still find dog hair, in places I would rather not say. Is this just the consequences of such a great and obedient dog. She is a mix. Another question , she fetches and retrieves rather well, but I cant get her to catch the toys in the air. She just waits till it hits her nose then grabs it. Any tips to train her to catch or is she just young and hasn't master it yet? Any replies is appreciated.
p.s. She is best dog I ever had.

Great breed, butttttttttt..... The long hair and required maint comes with the breed - Good Luck with That !!! I yearn for the days when my now 10 year old Doberman would fetch !!! Hey , every dog " fetches " , kinda like we are right or left handed. It really do sent matter whether we are right or left handed does it ?? Your dog is just being......... your dog ,so enjoy !!! His personality will change along with yours and your both better off for it , don't ya think ?

Dogs shed, nothing you can do about it. Regarding catching in the air....just keep trying.

she might be nervous. or she could have a skin condition/hair problem. their is a type of disease where dogs lose there hair in spots all over their body. i would suggest taking her to the vet.
hope this helped!!! good luck!!!!

The shedding could be a vitamin deficiency. Make sure you are giving her a good quality food. If you are and you are brushing her, then you will just have to tolerate it.
She will eventually catch what you throw. She just hasn't gotten it yet.
She will be a fabulous pet. Labs are loyal to the end and the most willing to please animals I have ever had the pleasure of owning.

sometimes u have to sacrifice some things. to help cut down the hair u find in ur house. vaccum at least once a day. and keep brushing her. also bathe her every two weeks. this will cut down on a lot of dead fur. as for the catching problem. she may never catch in her mouth. i finally got my dog to start catching a frisbee in his mouth after about a year of working with him. now that we have that step down we r starting to make him jump. and start with little pieces of treats. and work ur way up. that is what we did with my dog.

Almost all dogs shed- it's natural and there isn't much you can do about it except brush her and try using a shedding dog shampoo from the pet store (except they usually don't help much). As for the catching the toy in the air, she is a little young and is probably just scared to try and catch it so I'd just keep trying.

Call the groomer and ask about getting her shaved. Believe it or not, she won't look that different. She'll look a couple of shades lighter and much smoother. You have to have her shaved every couple of months, though because it grows back.(Just make sure its a reputable groomer, though) I'm not sure how to make her catch things in the air, though.

some dogs generally mault rather alot, you can massage her twice a day and brush her twice a day which will decrease the amount of hair. and some puppys don't get the mouth eye co-ordination my lab puppy is 1year old now and has just got to grips with cathing a ball !!! it just takes time.

Try training your dog to catch with small treats, then graduate to toys. I used a penn-plax 'sheepskin' ball to teach my dog to catch toys. It's much softer on her nose if she misses than say, a tennis ball. She's about 80% successful now at catching and 2 years old.
As for the shedding: Premium foods help- a lot. Also, purchase a tool called a Sheddin' Blade. This is fantastic on dogs with coats like yours. My dog is a lab/spaniel mix- medium length, fine hair.

Try putting another lab in with her for play time they will compete for the toy. Then bath %26amp; brush her, this breed is mix so your going to have shedding.

Shedding: I have a lab and as a pup she shed continuously. There didn't seem a time when she shed less or more, just all the time. After she was a year she began to shed much less, but blow coat twice a year (when the hair comes out in handfulls and blows through your house like tumbleweeds). Sort of annoying when she is blowing coat, but it's only that bad for about two or three weeks. And in between the hair is much more manageable than when she was a pup.
Not sure what your lab is mixed with, but there is a good chance that after she gets rid of puppy fur and has an adult coat, she will stop shedding so much all the time and blow coat twice a year.
Catching: Can she catch food? You can teach her to catch food pretty easily, by dropping it first from right over her head. Since she has lab in her, she should be very food motivated. Once she can catch it from righ above her head, move farther away until she learns to catch it when you toss it to her. Then she'll have the idea to catch and you can start using toys. I'd start out really close again when you switch to toys. Just drop it into her mouth, and when she catches, treat her. She'll soon get the idea and you can back farther away. But keep treating her when she catches until she is really used to it.
ALSO -- sometimes a puppy doesn't catch on to catching things before a certain age (maybe 10-12 months). Their eye-mouth coordination is still developing. So if your dog isn't good at catching now, keep trying. She will get better.

Thats a Lab for ya- you should of thought about that before getting her breed.
I don't understand your question retrieving.

Certain breeds are known to shed alot and labs are one of them. Daily brushing definately helpful. There is a shedding brush on the market right now that gets under the top coat and will remove much of the excess hair that other brushes don't. Most pet stores carry it and it does cost a pretty penny but it works. I have a Rottie(another breed that sheds constanttly.) and I taught him to allow me to use the vaccum attachment over his coat. He loves it and won't leave me alone whjen I run the vaccum until I groom him with it. The suction of the vac also helps remove extra hair. There are also supplements out that boast to aid with shedding but I can't say if they work-agian look for them at the petstore.
Labs are smart and if you keep trying with the catch trick she should pick it up. Throw the ball and catch it your self several times to get her interest in it raised. Wave the ball several times in front of her to make sure she's watching it and then throw it up in the air. Don't throw it too high so it stays in her field of vision. Also don't throw it directly at her but off to the side a little to encourage her to go after it. You can also try bouncing it off the ground to encourage her to catch it. In time she will hopefully come to understand what you are asking of her.

Brewers Yeast with Garlic for the shedding.I use this on my shedding dogs. They sell bottles of it in the pet stores. For getting her to catch things in the air. Try starting her catching things low. Then toss a tittle higher and so on untill the desired height. It works i have done this with all my dogs and it works. Key: Time and patience!!!!

We have a Yellow Lab/Golden Retriever mix. He used to shed really bad. We started him on Eagle Pack dog food about a year ago, and his fur is so soft and shiney and he hardly sheds at all. He also used to get hot spots on his skin, but doesn't have those any more either. You might look at a different type of dog food to help with the shedding.
As for the catching a toy in the air, work with her, she'll probably eventually catch on, but don't be upset with her if she doesn't. Some dogs just don't do certain tricks. Our dog (who will be 11 on Sept. 28) will jump high into the air to catch a tennis ball. He knows "sit, stay, down" but has never caught onto "give me your paw". But that's OK, we love him anyway!!

Labs shed and I have two that I would not trade for a million dollars. Food makes a huge difference. I now have my dogs on Wellness Core it is all protein NO GRAIN and no preservatives. The protein makes ahuge differnce and quality of protein. Wellness is a holistic food and uses USDA grade meat the Wellness Core has 5 different meat. The commerical foods use cheap low grade meat. The Wellness also has the Omega Fish Oils which is excellent for the coat. If you do not go with a food high in Omega 3 and 6 buy a supplement with it. It helps a great deal. Over bathing is a huge problems for Labs. Labs have a natural ol in their coat and bathing too much will strip the coat and cause dry skin and brittle hair. I wash my Labs once a month. I also vacume my dogs. Sounds crazy but it helps immensely. I started them when they were pups and now they love it.
My female Lab will NOT jump to catch the ball to save her life, but my male loves to. I started him by sitting him in front of me and throwing the ball up and eventually he started to jump up and catch it. Each time I made a huge ordeal of praise and he began to think it was a good thing. I gradually increased teh distance to the point he could be 30 feet and jump up to catch it. I also did work with him jumping off a dock into water to catch the ball. It took him a few tries but he loves to please and now does a little party dance when he catches it in the air.

There isn't actually much you can do about dogs shedding their fur, however switching the shampoo may help. At your nearest Bed Bath and Beyond they do sell a Shed Ender Pro. I think its really effective!
